A text and reference discussing the statistical methods necessary for treating many problems in modern optics, and applying those methods to a variety of problems in the fields of image formation and detection. Chapters treat random variables, random processes, some first-order properties of light waves, the theory of partial coherence, imaging with partially coherent light, atmospheric degradations of images, and fundamental noise limitations in the detection of light. Includes homework problems for classroom or self-study.
