This book derives from many years of introducing philosophy students to ideas
of probability that impinge on other philosophical topics. That experience has
convinced me that these ideas need to be in the intellectual tool-kit of all serious
philosophers, just as the basic ideas of logic are. But while the latter need is
widely recognised, the former is not, a fact which seems to be part cause and part
effect of a paucity of books that introduce conceptually interesting aspects of
probability in a simple and unbiased way. This book is partly an attempt to fill
that gap. But only partly, since ideas from other areas of philosophy can shed as
much light on probability as it does on them. So this book is meant not just for
philosophers but for everyone who has occasion to use ideas of probability and is
interested in their implications.
