These are the Proceedings of an International
Symposium on Dynamical Systems, that took place at the Instituto
de Matematica Pura e Aplicada (IMPA), Rio de Janeiro, in July-
August, 19 81.
The Meeting was to celebrate the opening of IMPA's
new building "Edificio Lelio Gama" , a dream of more than 10
years that came true.
Many friends (mathematicians) contributed to the
success of the Meeting. Financial support came from many sources
especially CNPq and PAPESP (Brasil), Brasilian Universities, CNRS
(France), GMD (Germany), British Council, NSF (U.S.A), Internationa
Mathematical Union (IMU) and Research Councils of Argentina, Chile,
Mexico and Venezuela.
We are thankful to all and, in particular, to Lindolpho
de Carvalho Dias, the Director of IMPA.
