This book is a testimony to the lively activity and interaction among the areas of one and two-dimensional topology, algebraic topology, and combinatorial group theory. This book is not a book of completed research. It is more a book of ideas. Many of the ideas presented here are still in their infancy. It is hoped and expected that the work here will spur the authors here and others to new exciting developments.
