It has become a tradition that one or two mathematical conferences be held annually in Singapore, and the second such conference of 1986 was a workshop and conference on analysis, held on the campus of the National University of Singapore from June 12 through June 21, 1986. This volume forms the proceedings of the workshop and conference, which emphasized mainly harmonic and functional analysis. The invited speakers were E. Hewitt, S. Igari, A. Miyachi, G. Pisier, and J. J. Uhl, Jr., and they have contributed a total of five papers to these proceedings. One other invited speaker, S. Gong, was unfortunately unable to attend the conference, due to unforeseen circumstances, but has kindly sent us a paper based on the address that he would have given. As there were more papers submitted than could be included in this volume, the remainder of the contributed papers were selected on the basis of referees' reports. A list of the talks given at the conference, as well as the names and affiliations of participants and contributors immediately follow this preface.
