The article by P. Bernays “Zur Frage der Unendlichkeitsschemata in der axiomatischen Mengenlehre”, in: Essays on the Foundations of Mathematics, dedicated to Prof. A. A. Fraenkel (Magnes Press, Jerusalem, 1966) pp. 3-49, was translated into English by J. Bell (Oxford) and M. Pliinitz (Southampton). Prof. Bemays was so good as to provide a list of publications and a “Kurze Biographie” which was kindly translated into English by Dr. Diana Schmidt (Heidelberg). I am grateful to Dr. U. Felgner (Tubingen) and Dr. T. mannagan (Louvain) for their kind help in preparing this volume. It was the continuous and unselfish readiness and help of my friend Dr. K. Gloede (Heidelberg) which enabled me to overcome many dficulties; in addition he prepared the Index and looked after the coordination of the Bibliography.
