Today an ever increasing number of workers active in applied mathematics, the physical sciences, and engineering are finding use for a large-scale digital computer in the solution of problems. Many of these workers as a part of their professional competence have acquired an understanding of the mathematics underleying the solution of problems on a digital computer, whereas others find the mathematics involved to be a new or relatively unexplored area.
