The introduction of generalized functions has considerably advanced mathematical analysis, in particular harmonic analysis and the theory of partial differential equations. In a non rigorous way, electrical engineers and physicists have been using generalized functions for almost a century. Still they employ generalized functions such as the Heaviside step function and the Dirac delta function as if they were genuine С**-functions. But it took some time before mathematical justification has been taken up.
