This is the sixth anthology of my articles for the Scientific American department called Mathematical Games. As in previous collections, the articles have been expanded, errors corrected, bibliographies added. I am grateful to the magazine for the great privilege of contributing regularly to its pages, to my wife for unfailing help in proofing, and as always to the hundreds of Scientific American readers whose suggestions have added so much to the value of the original articles.
