We are pleased to lend our support to this deserved appreciation of Clayton Aucoin for his efforts in curriculum reform in the mathematical sciences. Our involvement with the mathematical sciences at Clemson
University began over twenty years ago as members of an “advisory committee” composed of academicians and representatives of business, industry, and government. Our task was to consult with a group of faculty members headed by Clayton Aucoin concerning their efforts to develop graduate programs based on breadth of training in mathematics, computing, operations research, and statistics. The central concern at the time was to establish a master’s level curriculum with special attention to providing graduates with a broad knowledge of the mathematical sciences useful in applied settings.
