This book comprehensively reviews surface enhanced Raman vibrational studies of
solid/gas interfaces. It briefly illuminates the current state of understanding of
SERS as inferred from relevant experimental results. Emphasis is put on the presentation
and evaluation of SER vibrational data from various molecules adsorbed on
metal surfaces, in particular silver and the other noble metals. In addition, applications
of SERS to problems in tribology and catalysis as well as related
surface enhanced phenomena like enhanced nonlinear optical effects or infrared absorption
are described. SER studies of metal electrodes and colloidal suspensions
are not treated since these are summarized in several other reviews.
