The purpose of this paper is lo discuss some of the many different evolution equations which arise in connection with wave motion, some directly and others as asymptotic approximations. Wave motion itself may be regarded as the manifestation of some form of Innereit instability in a process, so perhaps 1t is to be expected that the equations which govern Us many different aspects belong to no clearly defined class.
