This is the English translation of my revised doctoral dissertation, written under the supervision of Professor Wolfgang Struve in Freiburg imBreisgau in 1958. It was published the following year by Martinus Nijhoff. The idea of having an English translation of this book prepared after so many years came from the promptings of my Heideggerian colleagues, Glenn Gray and David Farrell Krell. They helped me to realize that the broader focus of this earlier work might well be of equal or even greater interest to students and scholars of Nietzsche than my later book. I have myself in the last two years written papers elaborating some of the themes in The Problem of Time in Nietzsche—for example, those of amor fati and the "innocence of becoming."
