The book focuses on the prescribing process of intravenous nutrition
support but starts by describing why nutritional care in general is
so important. It then briefly discusses patients who might need oral or
enteral feeding as well as those who need IVN before it moves on to
what should be given, what can go wrong and how to deal with any
IVN-related problems. Finally, it covers the organisational aspects of
nutritional care, emphasising that doctors, nurses, dietitians and
pharmacists must work together in multidisciplinary nutrition support
teams to make the right decisions on the wards. Meanwhile, behind the
scenes, pharmacists and pharmacy Technical Services units must also
undertake vital roles to ensure patient safety and cost-effectiveness.
