This introductory text is about 300 pages shorter than most general chemistry texts, due to elimination of material not suitable for a beginning course. Coverage progresses from matter and measurement through organic chemistry. Learning features include key concepts and equations, concept summary problems, four different types of exercises, and boxes on real-life applications and biographical sketches of pioneers in the field. Five mathematical appendices are included. Masterton has taught chemistry and chemical thermodynamics at the University of Connecticut. Hurley is lecturer and coordinator of freshman chemistry at the University of Connecticut.
