Aizawa (Departments of Electrical Engineering and Frontier Informatics, University of Tokyo, Japan) and contributors in informatics, imaging science, and electronic engineering describe the state of the art of image processing technologies from various points of view, focusing on sensing, algorithms, and applications. Early chapters describe image processing methodologies related to three-dimensional imaging, and later chapters examine sensors for advanced image processing systems and describe applications in facial image processing, human-machine interaction, document analysis and recognition, medical image processing, and intelligent transport systems. All 10 chapters were originally published in 1999 as a special issue of survey papers on image processing in the journal IEICE Transactions on Information and Systems.
