This book presents the text of the inaugural lecture given by Professor G. I. Barenblatt on appointment to the G. I. Taylor Professorship of Fluid Mechanics. Fittingly, Professor Barenblatt chose to present a study of scaling phenomena in several topics studied by G. I. Taylor throughout his varied career.
