Synopsis

Jumbo jets contain about 4.5 million parts. That fact alone should scare more people into close attention to reliability, quality and safety. Dhillon (mechanical engineering, U. of Ottowa) takes an interdisciplinary approach that includes mathematics, modeling, management, and money. He gives the history of the quality and safety disciplines, references, and the basic mathematics used in creating and evaluating data. He introduces reliability models and their testing and evaluation methods, and concepts of quality and its analysis methods. Dhillon's descriptions of safety issues include safety analysis methods, management and costing, and safety on robots, software, and medical devices. Dhillon includes examples, problems (and answers) and lists of relevant resources.
