Editing this Handbook has been a huge learning experience for us. When we had the initial idea in 2017, we were unsure still about the shape and nature of memory activism as a field. The process of putting together the Handbook allowed us to map it out by engaging and learning from many wonderful colleagues, as well as activists. We are in awe of the creative, inspiring, and often brave work being done to remember the past in ways that uncover untold stories and that support democratic, peaceful, and more equitable and just futures. As general editors, our investment of time and energy was immense, but our collaboration was always fun as well as pragmatic; it helped each of us realize what the other had in mind and push it further. The Handbook, for us, produced not only scholarship but also a lasting friendship.
