It is a joy to be able to thank all those whose insight, criticism, and gen- erous support have contributed to this book. At the top of the list is the person to whom the book is dedicated: Edwin Judge. In the spring of 2006, I was invited to present lectures as the Visiting Fellow at the annual conference of the Society for the Study of Early Christianity at Macquarie University. The knowledge that Edwin Judge would be my respondent on this occasion lent a special intensity to the preparation of lectures in which I sought to build upon the insights of Edwin Judge and his student Peter Marshall into the social and rhetorical conventions that governed friendship, enmity, and reconciliation in the Greco-Roman world.
