Название: Philo-Semitism in Nineteenth-Century German Literature
Автор: Massey I.
Аннотация:
Argues that most of the non-Jewish 19th-century German authors considered here expressed both antisemitic and philosemitic views. Focuses on Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, but also discusses works by Karl Gutzkow, Bettine von Arnim, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Friedrich Hebbel, Gustav Freytag, Wilhelm Raabe, Theodor Fontane, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Ludwig Anzengruber, Ferdinand von Saar, and by the Alsatian Alexandre Chatrian. Ascribes philosemitism to the authors' guilt feelings about Jews, which are compared to Jewish self-hatred. A short chapter on women and philosemitism touches on complex, often antagonistic attitudes of non-Jews toward Jewish women. Stereotypes play a large role in the presentation of Jewish figures in these literary works
