It’s been a rare pleasure to work on this book together over the last several years. What could be better than editorial meetings at Fenway Park? We’ve often shaken our heads at how long this project was taking, but perhaps we’re guilty of not wanting to let it go.
We’re grateful, first, to Chris Rogers, now retired from Yale University Press, for helping us launch the New Directions in Narrative History series, and for pushing us to pursue this anthology. It’s a shame that he’s a Yankees fan, but we eventually got over that. His replacement at the Press, Adina Berk, is the person who ultimately made it possible for us to publish this book in our series, and she’ll always have our deepest appreciation.
