Название: Memory and Identity in the Syriac Cave of Treasures. Rewriting the Bible in Sasanian Iran

Автор: Minov S.

Аннотация:

Since the very beginning of Christianity, the Bible formed a backbone of the new religion. The belief in a revealed Scripture, held by Christians, set in motion complex dynamics that affected the life and culture of Roman society on many levels, engendering what Guy Stroumsa has aptly called the “scriptural universe” of ancient Christianity. Scholars interested in the religious, cultural, and social impact of the Bible in late antique Christendom tend to focus, for the most part, on literary works or material evidence coming from the Greco-Roman world. One should not forget, however, that the boundaries of the Christian scriptural universe extended beyond those of the Roman empire. In this book, I intend to venture into one of the less explored corners of this universe by discussing the crucial role that reception of the Bible played in the cultural history of the Syriac Christians who lived in the territory of the Sasanian empire.
