The chapters of this volume represent a selection of studies originally prepared for journals and conferences. Due to the diversity of the publications and audiences, as well as the time span involved, it could well be asked what presiding or connective principles would give unity and cohesion to the total statement of this book. I can suggest two responses to this question, one historical and the other internal to the subject matter itself.
