I have known Dr. Lan Rixu for many years. We first met in 2003 when we began to write A Financial History of China. He was responsible not only for writing the chapters on the late Qing and the early Republic but also the compilation work of the chronology. Through our exchanges, I knew that he came to work in the School of Economics of the Central University of Finance and Economics after his graduation from Nankai University. He is a person with an amiable personality, scholarly diligence, willingness to think, and unique insights. In 2004, he published The Modernization of China’s Finance with the Commercial Press, which was a revised and expanded version of his doctoral thesis. This year marked the approval of the 12th Five-Year Guideline in the 14th meeting of the 11th National People’s Congress of the Republic of China.
