While I am glad to be able to offer this third edition of our book which comes about
thanks to a change of publisher, I lament at the same time the death of my co-author and
old friend Hugh Rkhardson, with whom I have been in contact since the early 19505
concerning our joint interest in Tibetan studies as well as the welfare of Tibetan refugees.
