Since the technique of localization has involved the study of purely
group-theoretical aspects of the theory, and since, in its general aspects, it is
related to abstract work in homology theory and category theory, it was decided to
make the terms of reference of the symposium fairly broad so that the many facets of
localization theory could receive attention. Thus, although all the papers in this
record of the conference are definitely related to localization, they are not
necessarily concerned with the theory itself, nor with its special application to
homotopy theory.
