Case 1 introduces nutrition therapy for treatment of disorders of weight balance and draws our attention to these major public health concerns in the United States. The first case addresses pediatric obesity and can be used as a springboard for a discussion of the implications of the rapidly rising rate of childhood obesity. The incidence of childhood obesity has more than tripled over the past three decades with an es- timated 13.7 million children and adolescents in the United States meeting the criteria for overweight and obesity. The child featured in Case 1 is representative of children ages 6–11. The obesity rate for children and adolescents aged 2–19 years is approximately 18.5%. Pediatric obesity treatment requires complex interventions to address family, environmental, and economic concerns. This case allows the student to explore the current research and the use of evidence- based guidelines to determine appropriate medical nutrition therapy.
