This book seeks to investigate the social production of the religious compassionate field in the era of shale modernity in the twenty-first century. It focusses specifically on Buddhist compassion and the production of the
Buddhist compassionate fields and microfields in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan, three places that each have a majority Chinese population. It argues that the modern world we live in has experienced rapid development and wealth accumulation, which has resulted in a widening wealth gap that has led to social inequality, social injustice, and social suffering. Within the context of these social ills, Buddhist compassionate fields and microfields have emerged as a solution to cater to these marginalised segments of the population.
