I am happy to bring out the second edition of the book on Combustion Technology—
Essentials of Flames and Burners. In this edition, at the end of the chapter exercise problems have been added to Chaps. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. These problems would
provide hands-on training for estimating stoichiometric air, product composition,
flame temperature, rate of reactions, flame speed, flame length and other flame
characteristics, and calculations involving burners fueled by gas, liquid and solid
fuels.
A new chapter (Chap. 8) on numerical modeling of laminar flames has been
added. This chapter systematically presents the governing equations for a reacting
flow. Terms involved in the governing equations are explained in detail. Calculation of
diffusion velocity in a comprehensive manner and simplifications made in the calculations of ordinary and thermal diffusion coefficients have been discussed. All the terms
in the energy equation for a reacting flow have been explained thoroughly. Procedures for calculating thermo-physical properties such as density, viscosity, specific
heat, thermal conductivity, mass and thermal diffusion coefficients, as a function of
temperature and species concentration, have been presented systematically
