Probably begun by Jan van Eyck and finished by a member of his workshop, the Frick's Virgin and Child with St. Barbara, St. Elizabeth, and Jan Vos and the Gemaldegalerie's Virgin and Child with St. Barbara and Jan Vos, painted a few years later by Petrus Christus, both depict the Carthusian monk Jan Vos being presented to the Virgin by St. Barbara. And both of these masterpieces were commissioned by Jan Vos during his tenure at the helm of the Charterhouse of Bruges in the 1440s. The reunion-for only the second time in their history-of these extraordi- nary panels is at the heart of this thought-provoking exhibition and its accompa- nying publication that bring to light the little-known monk as an important patron of the period, examine Van Eyck's and Christus's links to the Carthusian Order, and reveal the fascinating ways in which images were used, viewed, and valued by late medieval monastic communities.
