The author published a monograph entitled Deep Excavation: Theory and Practice in 2006. Since then, the book has been extensively used as a textbook at many famous universities in the world, and it has also become an important reference work for engineers to deal with deep excavation problems. However, recently soil constitutive models and geotechnical software developments have made great progress, and many new research results have been obtained. During this period, the author and his team also published many articles in international journals and published conference papers at some important international conferences. The author feels it is time to update the book.
The most important updates include the construction of diaphragm wall, fun- damentals of effective stress undrained analysis and total stress undrained analysis, advanced constitutive soil models, allowable settlement of buildings, and control of ground settlement with cross walls and buttress walls. The failure mechanism of excavations is also elucidated in detail. The stability analysis methods are therefore presented in relation to the failure mechanism as discussed in the book, which are very different from that in the previous version and that in other journal papers.
