Our endeavour to comprehend the nuances of middle-class life and circumstances in India began amidst the celebratory discourse around rising new middle classes in post-liberalisation India. In fact, our attention to the phenomenon was drawn through continued research and field engagement with poverty, migration, and spa- tial segregation in the urban.These engagements drew us towards the intertwined yet complicated relationship between the working classes and new middle class that needed closer exploration.A few scholarly publications and a growing number of popular articles point out that this new social category has emerged as a subject of interest and warrants serious academic attention. In the backdrop of growing inter- est in the new middle class, this book endeavours to add to the body of literature on the subject by recognising the diversity within this new class regarding people, their practices, and the production of spaces.Through this volume, we have explored the new middle class phenomenon in its intersectionalities in terms of gender, caste, religion, and other socioeconomic markers from various cities across the country.
