Аннотация:
This book is based on selected papers presented in the multisession work- shop “Politics of Memory: Making Slavery Visible in the Public Space,” held during the 125th American Historical Association Meeting in January 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts. I am indebted to to David Lowenthal and Peter H. Wood for their insightful comments. I am also grateful to Bogumil Jewsiewicki and to the other two anonymous reviewers for their suggestions and criticism. I thank the authors who agreed to participate in this venture, who always answered in a timely manner my queries, and from whom I learned a lot during our fruitful exchanges. Particular thanks are owed to Dr. Joseph E. Reidy, Associate Provost of Howard University. With his sup- port and the help of Mr. Rohinton Tengra, I was able to receive a generous summer grant from the Provost’s Office, which allowed me to finish editing this book. I also thank Dr. James A. Donaldson, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of Howard University. The College provided me with funds to participate in the American Historical Association Meeting in Boston. I also thank Alhaji Conteh, PhD student in the Department of History at Howard University, who assisted me in proofreading some chapters of this book. I am especially grateful to Laura Stearns, my editor, and to Stacy Noto, editorial assistant, at Routledge. They closely assisted me during the various stages of the manuscript’s preparation, always answering patiently my numerous questions. Finally, I thank my husband Alain Belanger. His love, patience, kindness, and enthusiastic support encouraged me to start and to finish this project on time.
