The recent collapse of the international financial system, followed by the worst economic crisis since the 1930s, is the latest reminder of the extent to which national standards of living and social wellbeing have become dependent on developments in the rest of the world. Even the largest economies are unable now to maintain these standards without the active cooperation of other countries.
