After a series of talks in the UK on a diagrammatic approach linking lattice
gauge theory and topological quantum field theory I was asked by the
publisher if I would like to write a lecture notes volume on the subject. After
some hesitation I decided that this might be a good idea as the presented
approach has unique features which hopefully make it interesting to both
mathematicians and physicists.
