The workshop was truly interdisciplinary in nature and could have been given the alternative title "Convergent and Divergent Series Resulting from the Perturbation Treatment of Several Problems in Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Field Theory, and the Theory of Phase Transitions." Many of the contributions to the workshop dealt with the mathematical subtleties of the "Summation of divergent series," and "Borel summability." Others were concerned with specific model problems as illustrative examples of such summation techniques. The papers on single well and double well anharmonic oscillators, the ground and excited states of the hydrogen atom in a constant electric or magnetic field, and the 1 /R expansion for diatomic molecules reflect this. These applications are of interest in part because they provide useful models of quantum field theory, field ionization phenomena in complex atoms, and realistic molecular potential energy surfaces. Divergent series are also encountered in the systematic use of the ideas of the renormalization group in the theory of phase transitions. Some contributions dealt with this problem. Others considered the use of rational approximations and the direct calculation of upper and lower bounds to eigenvalues.
