In 1996 I published a collection oflectures entitled Afternotes onNumericalAnalysis. The unusual name reflects the unusual way they were produced.
Instead of writing the notes and giving the lectures, I gave the lectures and then wrote the notes in real time, two lectures a week. In preparing the
notes I hoped to bring the immediacy of the classroom to the printed page and give an uncluttered presentation that could be used for self-study or to supplement a course.
