In times of trouble and distress, many of the old Greeks and Romans sought consolation in philosophy, and found it. To-day we may well say that there is hardly any science so well adapted as is theoretical physics to divert the mind from the mournful present and to lead it into other spheres; it can, however, offer this attraction only to the few who have studied it for years.
