This volume is the tangible residue of the Summer School in Mathematical
Logic that was held in Cambridge in 1971 and which lasted from the first
to the twenty-first of August. It was recognised as an European meeting
of the Association for Symbolic Logic, and was financed by grants from
the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization,
who listed it as an Advanced Study Institute, from the Science Research
Council of Great Britain, the Division of Logic Methodology and
Philosophy of Science of the International Union of History and
Philosophy of Science, the British Council, and the IBM Corporation.
To all those the Organizing Committee express their gratitude. They
