The quantum theory of fields has, in recent years, led to important
theoretical progress in elementary particle physics and also in statistical
mechanics. At the same time, current developments in general relativity
and quantum field theory are becoming more and more interconnected. A
knowledge of the geometrical structures so essential for a discussion
of the classical theory of general relativity is also becoming
increasingly useful in the study of other classical and quantum field theories.
