It is the purpose of this book to provide a rigorous, comprehensive introduction to the finite Markov chain imbedding technique for studying
the distributions of runs and patterns from a unified and intuitive viewpoint, away from the lines of traditional combinatorics. Over the past two
decades, considerably many new results related to the distributions of runs and patterns have been obtained through this approach.
