The proof of a long standing conjecture can often result in a burst of nascent energy strong enough to affect many different areas. And so it has been with the recent proof by Schoen-Yau and Witten of the positive mass theorem. To capture some of this energy, a group of mathematicians and physicists met during the week of October 17, 1983 in Corvallis, Oregon.
