This book is about the techniques of modeling and simulating electric machinery. It evolved from a graduate-level course in simulation at Purdue that is aimed at introducing students to the modeling of power components and to using computer simulation as a toot for conducting transient and control studies. Simulation can be especially helpful in gaining insights to the dynamic behavior and interactions that are often not readily apparent
from reading theory. Next to having an actual system to experiment on, simulation is often chosen by engineers to study transient and control performance or to test conceptual designs. Its use in teaching is growing now that inexpensive and powerful personal computers with simulation capabilities previously available only in specialized facilities are widely accessible to students.
