Although QCD seems to be the correct theory of the strong interactions I) , its applications to the main phenomena of strong interaction physics, such as hadron masses and hadron decay and production characteristics, is still in a rudimentary stage. Lattice simulations have now given a convincing demonstration that OCD confines, but attempts to calculate the masses of the low-lying mesons and baryons on the lattice, while qualitatively encouraging, have not yet reached a satisfactory conclusion 2) . It is unclear, moreover, how much further these ab initio calculations can be taken with for seeable computer capacity.
