The ultimate goal of gene mapping is to identify the genes that play important roles in the inheritance of particular traits (phenotypes) and to explain
the role of those genes in relation to one another and in relation to the environment. In practice this ambition is often reduced to identifying the genomic
neighborhoods where one or a small number of the important genetic contributors to the phenotype are located
