This collection of papers contains the proceedings of the Symposium held at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Triest (Italy) on 18-25 September 1972. The purpose of this symposium was to review, in historical perspective, the current horizons of the major conceptual structures of the physics of this century. The book is dedicated to Paul Dirac on the occasion of his seventieth birthday.
