Yeasts belonging to the genera Saccharomyces and Rhodotorulu, other fungi
such as Neurosporu crussu and Aspergillus niduluns and the green alga
Chlorellu sp., have long been recognized as suitable experimental material
for investigating the mechanisms and physiological roles of nutrient transport
processes at the plasma membrane of micro-organisms. The relevant recent
literature about some of the above systems, together with certain other
examples, is the main subject of the present review, which emphasizes various
aspects of the kinetics, energetics and genetic basis of solute transport
