This volume continues the precedent set with the previous volume for which a guest editor was selected. It was my privilege to be invited
to edit Volume 11 of this prestigious series.
Volume 11 examines in detail a number of different areas in computer
and information science that are of particular interest and significance
today. The topics were chosen particularly to demonstrate how extensive
and diverse is the field commonly known as computer and information
science. Each of the papers discusses the background and recent activity
and research in a particular area.
Included in this volume is a recent survey of the field of automatic
translation of languages. Written by Professor Harry Josselson who
has done extensive research on the linguistic structure of the Russian
language and who has been concerned with the problems of the machine
translation of Russian to English, this survey updates the one by
Dr. Y. Bar-Hillel published in the first volume of this series.
