The world of psychic experience and the changes that can be
observed to occur in it have long interested me. My early
experiences in general practice with hypnotic techniques, and the
problems associated with them, gave me some conviction of the
need to recapture, if possible, the totality of an experience, real or
phantasied, particularly where it had been psychically traumatic,
in order for therapeutic change and psychic growth to develop in
the patient. It is both the intellectual knowledge of experiences
and the emotional states involved in them that need to be brought
to conscious awareness for their assimilation and digestion into
the main psychical stream
